SPOKESMAN

Until 1925, weekly notices of our meetings were sent out on letterhead of the members, each in turn supplying the required number.

The notice of September 28, 1925 contained an offer of a prize for the member who could suggest a suitable title for the weekly notice. "The Spokesman" was suggested by J. L. Ralston and adopted.

Under this name it first appeared on October 19, 1925 and for the first time on club paper on September 28, 1938.
Preparation of material for the weekly notice continued as a duty of the Secretary until September 1939 when it was decided to appoint an Editor for "The Spokesman".

The distinction of being the first Editor was conferred on Hugh Mills. Immediately on his taking over, "The Spokesman" was looked forward to with great interest each week and showed much originality, interesting illustrations and pointed humour.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of the Club, the "Spokesman" began to make its weekly calls, starting on July 13, 1954, on paper suggestive of gold, and so continued for many years.

By the early 1980’s, faced with substantially higher mailing costs, the decision was made to publish the Spokesman on a monthly basis instead of weekly. Later, it underwent a change in name, and publication on a monthly basis continued.

However, an exciting change occurred in July 2001 when, thanks in large part to the efforts of Rotarian Dale Crory, we were able to go back to a weekly newsletter sent by e-mail to those of our members (most of them) able to receive it in this way. This rejuvenation of our bulletin on a weekly basis has been a big morale booster for our members.
