MEETING PLACES
It is hard to realize in these days of inflation that when we met in the Green Lantern Restaurant for a full course luncheon, it only cost us 50¢ and it was a good lunch. Then when our genial host, Rotarian Will Hart, found it necessary to increase it to 60¢ there was some comment.
Of course, in later years we had more elaborate surroundings when we moved to the Halifax Hotel and later, in 1943 to the Nova Scotian Hotel. Other places of meeting in the early years included the Colonial Tea Room, the Carleton House, the Tally Ho, and the Lord Nelson Hotel.
In May 1983, the Manager of the Nova Scotian Hotel, Rotarian Ronald Phillips, reminded the Club that we had been holding our luncheons there for 40 years and provided a particularly fine dinner, and a large decorated Birthday Cake, carried in with lighted sparklers by Doug Watson, who had been supervising luncheon service for many years.
Unfortunately, after having operated for several years as the Halifax Hilton, the former Nova Scotian Hotel closed in 1993, and we had to find a new location for our meetings. We were fortunate in being able to make arrangements to hold our meetings at the Holiday Inn Select at the Willow Tree, and continued there until July 2001 when we moved to our present location at the Halifax Police Association Club.
