THE FOURTH OBJECT
Dean MacRae made his mark in the field of legal education at the Dalhousie Law School and at the Osgoode Hall Law School.
In 1920, the Rotary International Convention at Atlantic City appointed him, along with Charles J. Burchell, to a Committee to redraft the Rotary International Constitution. The Dean proposed an amendment, the Fourth or International Object and this was adopted at the R. I. Convention at Edinburgh in 1921.
This fact gave him an honoured place in the ranks of Rotary International.
This Object commits Rotarians to programs with wide horizons.
These may be varied in nature but one of the most important is giving young people opportunities to meet others from different countries or areas.
Our Club has also sponsored several recipients from overseas of the Rotary Foundation
Fellowship and acted in a counselling role to Foundation Fellows attending our local Universities.
William P. Doull supplied an interesting item regarding his role as
counsellor to Kevin Williams, an R. I. Foundation Fellow from South Africa, during his Academic year, 1971-72, at Dalhousie. Kevin went on to Worcester College, Oxford.
Bill commented:
"Coming from a racially troubled land (as it was at that time), Kevin upheld a courageous liberalism. One may hope that on his return to South Africa as an outstanding academic he will contribute a personal philosophy of justice and humanitarianism in whatever field he chooses to exert his talents."
